The Supreme Court on Monday stayed for a week the Centre's order dismissing Satish Chandra Verma, a senior IPS officer who assisted the Central Bureau of Investigation in its probe in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, a month before his scheduled retirement.
The Supreme Court on Monday said it would hear on July 14 pleas, including the one filed by the sister of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and Ashraf, seeking constitution of a commission chaired by a retired apex court judge to inquire into their "custodial" and "extra-judicial deaths".

The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday gave a clean chit to the Delhi police in the Batla House encounter case, in which two suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists and a police officer were killed last year. The NHRC, which had conducted an inquiry in the case on the direction of the Delhi High Court, said in its report that there has been no violation of human rights by the actions of the police, in which two alleged terrorists were gunned down on September 19.
